Easily the most trash and useless course I've taken so far. If you are really interested in Chinese & Japanese culture take it but I just want to warn you of the heavy readings. The course doesn't even talk about contemporary culture in China and Japan and just mostly talks about history. Tbh, just don't take this bs of a course, just pick other HUMA courses.

The course was heavy on readings. The prof would assign you 60+ pages of readings, readings include segments of journal articles, the book Dream of the Red Chambers, Shen Fu's Six Records of Life Adrift, plus his course kit (Note: This is just the first half of the this year term course). The prof assigns so many readings that you wouldn't even have to time read through all of them especially if you have 4 or 5 other courses to manage and if you are working. Honestly no consideration for students' time and he expects that you read everything for his tutorial classes. Watch out for assignments as well. The first assignment wasn't so bad, he just wanted you to learn how to analyze the reading and connect it to course materials and make an analysis out of it. The prof was nice but he's honestly bad at teaching. He would blurt out random Chinese words to his class and we would have no idea what he was talking about aside from his Chinese-speaking students whom he panders to the most. He's also so slow at marking. I was waiting for the first assignment's mark to see where I can improve so that I can do well on my second assignment. That didn't happen because he didn't give out the marks yet and the second assignment was already due in a week, which is so dumb smh...

I wish I knew the course load of the class. I didn't know it was going to be heavy in readings and writing essays.

DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE IF YOU PREFER TO READ ALMOST FOURTY PAGES MATERIAL.

THEY COVERED EVERYTHING IN THE EXAM. VERY MESSY.

JUST READ OUT THE SLIDES AND SHOW HIS CHINESE AND JAPANESE TO STUDENTS EVEN WE CAN NOT UNDERSTAND. NO REVIEW CLASS FOR BOTH LECTURE AND TUTORIAL. TUTORIALS ARE ALSO BORING AT ALL. SOME OF THE TA MAY TAKE STUDENT AWAY IF THEY DOESNT FINISHED THE READING.
