Comments on the course

This course really teaches statistics using Mathematica for any discipline and is offered outside of the department. Even though many examples come from biology, knowing the science isn't really so important as knowing how to perform the statistical analyses. Several assignments involved finding research in your own particular discipline as well. So anyone doing research that will incorporate statistical analyses could benefit from the course.

Course Content

The course is basically applied statistics using Mathematica software. The exams were effectively just like the homework and were all based on submitting Mathematica files. So all of the work is done by computer. There was weekly homework, but most of it could honestly be done in about an hour or so. Since this was an evening course, a few of us would just grab dinner and work on problems right before class.

Comments on the professor

Dr. Wilson gave useful and constructive feedback on all coursework and also would answer questions about problems right at the start of class. He would also stick around for a few minutes after class for any additional questions or feedback on ways to apply material from the class to thesis research.

Advice

Having some background in code would be useful for getting the full capabilities of Mathematica. Otherwise, this is a fairly simply "enter the math and have the machine do it" course. It's easy but has a lot of applications.
