I really liked this class. There were two books we needed, but they were both actual books so weren't too expensive and I was able to find one of them online. I took this class for fun for an extra diversity elective and I really enjoyed it and learned some new things from it. You learn some things about Russian culture through the fairytales which is cool.
Talking about Russian fairy tales and what makes them distinct from Western fairy tales. It's useful from a literary analysis standpoint because the analysis method primarily used in this class is laid out very clearly. So this class can be a good starting point if you need to do more classes like this but isn't very useful if you don't.
Michael was cool. He's a very down to earth guy. He does expect class participation though and got kinda annoyed at me i think because i missed a couple classes. He doesn't record lectures but does post the slides and usually the only thing that isn't on the slides is any in-class discussions that may happen.
We had at least short readings basically every class and there was the occasional movie that was hosted online. So there was a lot of content to take in and distill, even if it wasn't always very difficult. The tests also require remembering specifics from multiple short stories, so you need to study accordingly and actually do the readings.

The course is definitely an easy elective but not necessarily an easy A. Professor Gorham teaches the course very well and we rarely have quizzes. There are 2 exams which account for most of your grade. I would definitely recommend taking the course if you need a 3000+ course outside your major.
We read numerous books that talked about different aspects of the Russian culture.
Professor was fantastic. There is absolutely no downside of his lectures.
You definitely need to read the books.
