Comments on the course

I really liked this class. While there is some fiction discussed, lot of the literature in this class is actually made up of saved correspondence between queer people, so the historical basis is extremely solid. Obviously don't take this class if you don't "agree" with it, but it's pretty evenhanded and most of the speculative discussion was student-led in my experience.

Course Content

It's pretty much what it says on the tin, except there's also some focus on the queer pop culture of England and Europe as well just for additional context. So in this class, while it's primarily a literature class, it's also extremely grounded in history and provides a really solid backdrop of the state of things in the queer world at the time. And there was also some discussion about the exoticism of Middle Eastern and Polynesian people by the White gay community during the time period we discuss in the class, which was very interesting and I appreciated that we talked about it. Jodi also opened up for feedback on how she approached it at the end of the year, which I appreciated.

Comments on the professor

Jodi is cool. Once you show that you care about the course content to a certain level, she's generally pretty understanding about deadlines. She takes forever to grade though. The midterm essays took her a month to grade, and she gave them back all at once instead of as she finished them. The only reason finals didn't take her as long was because of that firm deadline. And she wasn't teaching any other classes at this time, so it was pretty frustrating. But she has a really thorough understanding and love of the source material, so I feel like I learned a lot from her.

Advice

Heavy sometimes multiple page readings every class, but Jodi also goes over a lot of them pretty thoroughly in class. If you skip class, then you'll miss out on crucial discussion and addition to the readings.
