Comments on the course

This class is 90% tedious homework assignments that take you 2-3 hours to complete each day. Since I took this class over Summer B, we had class every day and multiple homework assignments due each day at 9am. It also pretty much follows the same structure as Spanish 1. We had 2 IPAs, 4 LinguaMeetings, and roughly 5 chapters to cover. If you can, take Spanish somewhere or else or a different language completely.

Course Content

This course covers the past tense (preterite) and the imperfect along with a new set of vocab words from each chapter. Near the end, it gets more complicated with the use of direct/indirect objects, por v para, and the tu commands but you're never really quizzed too hard on them. Also, we are not given nearly enough time for the quizzes (30mins). I thought the textbook was useless and never helped me understand these concepts. The IPAs were not difficult as long as you prepared for them and they were worth the most toward your grade. We only had to do 4 LinguaMeetings which I thought were interesting since you're talking to a native Spanish speaker from a different country. I would just suggest making sure you're in a group of 4 people or else the 30 minutes will only be you talking. Parti...read more

Comments on the professor

Hadder is probably one of the better Spanish instructors teaching Beginning Spanish 2! He's very patient and understanding when it comes to students needs. He makes class very enjoyable. I would only recommend taking SPN1131 with him because he made the class very easy. He is also a fair grader and willing to negotiate points back if you talk to him. And he mostly spoke Spanglish during class so you were never completely lost.

Advice

I took this class S/U because of the horror stories I've heard about the Spanish department here. However, I ended with a high A. I think taking it over Summer B with no other classes is the best way to go because of how much work is assigned. I can't imagine taking a 5 credit course like this during a normal semester on top of 3-4 other classes. This course expects a lot from you and it really is ridiculous. Also, your professor will probably speak in Spanish most of the time so you really have to pay attention to that.
