Comments on the course

I think that the course stands to benefit from adjusting the labs. The first half of the course is a review of microprocessor applications (uP) but on a new set of hardware (Texas Instruments). You don't really get to do any cool DSP stuff until I believe Lab 6, and then there are roughly two more labs after that. I think that the assembly portion of the class can be gotten rid of entirely to save two labs that could be then used to do more interesting DSP stuff. I also wish there were more TAs.

Course Content

You will learn how to use TI's hardware and do a small amount of DSP. You'll learn about ADCs/DACs, wire-wrapping, sampling & aliasing, interpolation/decimation, filter implementation, and Fourier Transform stuff. So you'll get a bit of a blend of signals and systems (Fourier, sampling, aliasing) with a bit of uP stuff (embedded programming, SPI, I2C, etc.) Also, there were weekly quizzes that were a huge part of our grade. We rarely got enough time to work on it, we had no idea what the quizzes were going to be about beforehand, and there were times where Dr. Gugel would release the quiz late and not give us any time to reconcile that lost time.
