Prof: Dominique Laroche / Spring 2020

Comments on the course

If you're a physics major then understand that this is a weed out class for us. This was one of my first upper level physics classes and it really made me question my intelligence but I think my skills and knowledge in physics have grown a lot since then and I'd be able to do a lot better now.

Course Content

Basically you go over everything from physics 2 but in way more depth. It starts off with a brief calculus review, then the electrostatic force, the electric field, energy in the electric field, and capacitors. Now this is where the class gets difficult. You go more into voltage and learn how to solve Laplace's equation in different boundary conditions using different techniques such as Fourier series. Then you move onto dipole moments, and seeing how the electric field is affected in matter. Then you go onto magnetism and the Biot-Savart law. The magnetic vector potential and the magnetic field in matter. If that sounds like a lot, that's because it is. Get ready for a wild ride

Comments on the professor

This was professor Laroche's first time teaching a class and it definitely showed. He wasn't the best lecturer and he made the problems too difficult on the exams and quizzes. It got even worse when things transitioned to online. However, I've heard he's gotten a lot better since then so I don't want to bash on him since it was his first semester teaching.

Advice

Study for this class every week, if you fall behind good luck catching up.
