Comments on the course

Terrible prof, disgusting course policies.

Advice

TAKE THIS COURSE IN TERM 2 WITH ALIREZAH NOJEH. Linares has the world's most inflated ego and an extremely convoluted course policy. Please, take this in term 2 or be prepared to have your mental health permanently destroyed.

Comments on the course

Horrible course policies.

Advice

Understand all of the concepts behind the webworks and you will do fine on the midterms. The final on the other hand, ...just pray that you don't make a dumb mistake because that can decimate your exam grade and possibly lead to a fail.

Comments on the course

Highly useful course, with viciously designed policies. Avoid Linares.

Advice

Avoid Linares if possible. This course is mandatory for all second year Elec students, but he makes it so much more difficult than it needs to be, due to the extremely harsh, unnecessary, and malicious policies he creates that can DEFAULT students in many ways. What a national spectacle, that this exists in a well-known university in Canada.

Comments on the course

Found the content itself rather interesting, and for the most part problems can be solved in a very formulaic way. However the course policies are questionable at best (final answer only, or up to 40% if incorrect on FInal). Mini-midterms were final answer only since they were done on Webwork (yes, even pre-Covid). The mini-midterms always had a group portion of the exam (you do the same exam you took individually but in a group now) which are 10% of the midterm grade.

Advice

Show up to class every day for that attendance check and Tophat questions. Get to know people in your class and don't be shy to discuss answers for Tophat questions with them. I found my best resource to study for exams was to really dissect Webwork homework questions - the sets usually have like 1 or 2 questions that involve extra critical thinking. The final exam I remember had a question that required you to remember this small concept that wasn't really gone over in class so have fun with that. Pretty sure I bombed the final but the course gets scaled pretty high.

Comments on the course

Terrible prof, course policy designed to destroy your time, mental health and grade.

Advice

If you are in ELEC it may pushback your degree by a term but taking this course second term is worth it in the long run.

Comments on the course

Take this with any other prof other than Linares if you can.

Advice

IMHO, this course is much easier than ELEC 201, but Linares' policies still make everything worse than it needs to be. Read the textbook and watch Linares' videos (his videos are good, the course policies not so much).

Comments on the course

Interesting, and very useful course materials, but the course policies are absolutely horrible and the professor that's teaching it (Linares) makes sure the failure rate is high and consistent.

Advice

Focus on the videos, lecture materials and textbook. Be VERY CAREFUL when doing midterms and the final exam because a single, insignificant mistake can cost you the entire question (0 marks) and lead to a failure final grade. Make sure to start early on webwork since they sometimes take up to 10-15 hrs/week to solve.
