Comments on the course

It's great. I was not looking forward to it because I am naturally averse to COMM courses given my prior experiences, but every ounce of prejudice I had was quickly whisked away. Dr. Marken makes business comm rather enjoyable, and actually, quite interesting.

Course Content

Content was great. Learned how to write a killer cover letter. Killer resume. Killer presentation and public speaking skills. Learned how to write a solid report. Best part? Doesn't even have to be for a business. It can be for NGOs, aid organizations, governments, etc. You've got a ton of freedom to do whatever you want within these assignments, so you can write on virtually any topic. You will also get very fairly marked--you will be penalized only when you do not meet the assignment expectations or what have you--your topic of choice or focus on the assignment generates no marker bias like it might in other classes.

Comments on the professor

Dr. Marken is beyond fantastic. She cares about her students and is incredibly warm and welcoming. She makes class interesting with surprise activities every class, and because she has a PhD in education, she knows how to teach. As such, the experience with her is brilliant. It reminds me of taking COMM 120 with Colin Dodds. While the content is, perhaps unexpectedly, more riveting in COMM 220, Colin also had a BEd and as a result, knew how to teach us. I'm very glad both of these teachers emphasize students over content. So--Dr. Marken is wonderful and is quite possibly one of the top professors at Sauder--certainly a highlight of my degrees so far.

Advice

Know that this course is less commerce oriented than you might think. You're not going to suffer through memos and writing emails and the like--that's all very passé. You get to evaluate new methods of communication in business and non-business settings (IG, TikTok, Zoom, Discord, etc.) so that things really are brought into the 21st century. Frankly, I'd recommend you go in with good expectations if you have Dr. Marken--you will not be disappointed (I cannot stake that as a wholly universal claim, but you get the gist).
