Prof: Chelsea Freeborn / Summer 2025

This is my first semester at UBC, and Dr. Freeborn has quickly become my favourite professor. I genuinely enjoy her class, as it’s fun, engaging, and thoughtfully structured. I especially appreciate the quiz at the beginning of each lecture, as it motivates me to stay on top of the material. Although I have an unconventional educational background and tend to get distracted easily, this class consistently holds my attention.
The course focuses on family relationships and human development across the lifespan. It covers key concepts in child development, making it especially relevant for anyone interested in working with children or studying how people grow and change over time.
I haven’t approached her personally, but she seems warm and kind, and I really like her. She’s awesome—quick with grading and very prompt in responding to emails.
Read the syllabus, keep up with the textbook or modules, and attend her in-person lectures. Take notes during class, and you’ll do just fine.

No words (not even the ones below) will come near close enough to depict the horrors of this class and the absolute disgust I have for this prof and her blatant disregard for human dignity
If you want to learn about parenting OR lifespan development (the former is the main theme of the class, the latter is supposedly secondary at most but is the focus here), then TAKE FMST 210 WITH KATHY GREAVES. DO NOT TAKE FMST 312. OR ANY CLASS WITH CHELSEA. Kathy's 210 teaches everything you need to know, and is well taught. Also a well run course unlike this one
Everything is disorganized. Lectures are dry and irrelevant. Quizzes test on the nitty gritty details of textbook material (like quantitative stats), with many contradictions. Chelsea is a terrible writer, her questions, instructions, and even lectures are incomprehensible. Refuses to answer questions, and is not understanding. Believes in authoritative upbringings and nurture, but doesn't put that into practice at all. We're very on our own and left to fend for ourselves in a stressful and upsetting classroom environment, she'll even fail someone for missing class to get surgery or cancer treatment. For projects that are supposed to be much more practical, she swears by outdated theoretical frameworks and a heavy textbook approach, saying we need to market but absolutely rebuking that. DON'T. Family Studies is a known GPA booster, Chelsea knows that and absolutely despises that so she's on a mission to kill us all. Take another class. If you need a class for the family studies minor and insist on taking FMST 312, take Rafael Wainer
