Comments on the course

The course was somewhat interesting to me, even though I don't plan on majoring in chemistry. However, enjoyment of the course and ease of understanding heavily depends on how good your professor is and how much effort you put in to reading and doing the ChIRP problems. Midterm 1 is a canon event for all first-year science students taking this course but midterm 2 is better. The labs are kind of fun but tedious to prepare for. They started doing in-class tests before each of the midterms as a low-stakes assessment for students to gauge how well they knew the material. Just put in effort to studying the ChIRP, don't skip lectures, and go to office hours.

Course Content

Lots of bonding theories - VSEPR, molecular orbital theory, hybridization, etc.

Comments on the professor

Dr. Kil was one of the reasons I was able to do well in this course. He is always open to questions after class and during office hours and tries his best to support his students. His lectures are never boring and he incorporates great analogies to help his students understand the material. He also has a humorous personality and throws in jokes mid-lecture, and a loud voice that can project to the back of the lecture hall. He often uses models and visual simulators to explain concepts, which I found particularly helpful as a visual learner.

Advice

The labs are not as hard as you think, but prepare well for them so you know what to do during it. If you are unlucky and end up with a bad professor, see if you can crash another professor's lectures. Although, each professor does have their own participation portion (iClickers, surveys, etc.). Go to office hours if you don't understand something!! If you don't like your professor's explanations, try another professor's office hours, but you might have to ask around for their office hour times. Do ALL of the ChIRP exercises and additional problems and take advantage of ALL RESOURCES available to you. If you are in the Faculty of Science, SUS hosts CHEM midterm and final review sessions, and so does AMS. So go to those! AMS tends to use more exam-like questions and SUS reviews more basic a...read more

Comments on the course

I hate chemistry so of course I did not enjoy this class. It is clear on the midterms they are trying to filter out first year science students because the average was 48% on the first one. This course will haunt me.

Course Content

NO, I am not sure why we were in cooperating physics if no prior physics was required to take this class.

Comments on the professor

She was clearly passionate about chemistry, something i dont understand. She was friendly went out of her way to help students.

Advice

I personally would not spend 50 dollars on the bookstore molecular set for 121 I didnt find that it helped. There is some on amazon and websites that provide the same support. I also had to get a tutor because I did not wan to fail the class his name was Hooman you can find his Instagram pretty easily as well as he offers like 3 hour review sessions before each midterm which helped.

Comments on the course

Extremely difficult course but not impossible. Study hard, do all, and I mean all the practice problems. Don't get behind or try to cram, it won't work. But overall, a really interesting course!

Course Content

A lot of content, some of it really confusing but I found it really interesting!

Comments on the professor

Loved Prof Borduas. She's really passionate and is always trying to help. She can be a little abrasive when responding to questions (especially if it's something she just said), but she's patient overall.

Advice

Study every week. Don't get behind.

Comments on the course

I retook this course in my second year after failing it in the first year. Honestly the worst part about it is mainly that this course is on first year first term only, no preparation for you. But I still barely handled it this time. It's really tough. I got 58% in midterm 1, I thought I'm screwed, but I found out the course average was 48%. The midterm 2 was much easier and final was moderate. So get ready to fail it. Try to register this course with some easy courses, it takes a lot of time to study. Last year it had 4 in class quizzes for marks. But this year there were only 4 assignments (online quizzes), so much easier.

Course Content

I've written in my last year's review.

Comments on the professor

She's ok and kind. I didn't rely on her and basically studied by myself though.

Advice

To get a pass, you'll need to do all the exercise questions on chirp, that's the bottom line. You have to understand the concepts and logics in the questions Besides that, do as many practices as you can. Memorization in this course is helpless. Also, when you do the practice exams, time yourself. You will only have 1 hour in midterms. The final is much better. You need to memorize the conversions of eV and Å, they are not on the formula sheet.

Comments on the course

This course was just a waste of time. It just sucks, no matter how hard you try it doesn't matter.

Course Content

It was not useful. I'm a dental student I don't need to be learning about quantum mechanics, this is not physics.

Comments on the professor

She assumes everyone will become a chemist and yells at the class if they get a clicker question wrong. She's very passionate and seems like she loves her job but is a total jackass sometimes.

Advice

No matter how much you liked chem in highschool this course will make you hate it. You will also cry at least a few times. Also, be prepared to fail a midterm or two because the midterms are unfair. The lab section is also like a whole class in itself, everytime I had an EDF due I swear I had to spend a whole day on it.

It's completely useless if you're not in science or do not like or tend to major in chemistry.

She assumes everyone is majoring in chemistry, which is extremely incorrect.

Comments on the course

Big middle finger to this course! Clearly they used this course as a filter. One of the worst experience. 1. Lecture: Why should I study quantum mechanics my freshman year? I was completely unable to understand the Schrödinger equation, what wave-particle duality is, and what electron orbits are, which immediately made me fall into learned helplessness! And don’t expect professors to help you because you’ll always be in line (And due to the lack of a lot of basic knowledge, the professor cannot help you understand)! I looked up the Chem 121 exams from 2006 and that was just Chem 11 things! And now the same course is about quantum mechanics! Moreover, the content of the exam and the content of the simulation exercises are not at the same level at all; if the practice asks you to play airp...read more

Course Content

The first chapter is about Valence Electrons, and then we understand quantum mechanics, such as Schrödinger's formula, wave-particle duality, photons, electron orbits, etc. Also, the labs in this class have nothing to do with the lecture portion, you're basically taking two classes. The second experiment is about titration, and this is the only one that will be tested in the final.

Comments on the professor

He's not doing great but not doing bad either. It's more like this course itself is lame.

Advice

1. You got ONLY 1 shot. This course only opens in term 1 in year 1, if you fail it you can't take it again because they only consider winter session courses when applying the major. 2. Be prepared BEFORE uni. You'd better learn or preview basic stuff about quantum mechanics as well as other basic chemistry , and practice doing exams. And, you'd better gain a good understanding and skill of labs. 3. Don't take Math with it. You won't need math for bio majors, won't need chem for math/cs majors. You'll be exhausted with math+chem like I was. Choose your major before choosing term 1 courses. Also, don't take English/Writing with it either(unless you are experienced). 4. If you're like me, a very average normal guy, with no talent, no accumulation of chem knowledge or learning ability, I re...read more
