Comments on the course

I highly recommend this course if you are interested in urban inequality and current events. I am not an anthropology major but it was easy to get invested in the course material because of Tran's amazing lectures. Tran is very strict on writing discussion posts every night on the readings though, so you actually have to do all of the work. However she gave us a choice of either writing 1 or 2 essays for the term, and she gave us plenty of help if we asked for it. She's not a hard grader and wants you to succeed. We only had one final project and it wasn't too bad (no midterm).

Course Content

Most of the readings were very long, technical, and dry but Trinh Tran's lectures made up for it, and she was able to twist all the material and make it very thought-provoking. We had many interesting discussions in class, and even though it is technically a lecture, it was also very participation-based (sometimes we took walks outside to discuss the material in pairs, sometimes we had days where we would split off into small groups and talk).

Comments on the professor

Trinh Tran was the best professor I've ever had. She cares a lot about her students and is always willing to extend deadlines if you express to her that you are having a tough time. She's very relatable, down-to-earth, and an amazing lecturer. In the middle of the semester, she even set back her class plans for a few weeks to educate her students about the conflict in Ukraine. Take any class with her that you can!! She can make any subject interesting.
