Prof: Sonomi Consul / Fall 2025
Dec 17, 2025
The course was delivered online, and I appreciated how it was formatted. 3 lectures a week with transcripts, 11 quizzes (lowest quiz mark gets dropped), a group presentation, 3 reading assignments, and a final exam. ALL open booked. The only thing that might impact your mark is the group presentation. You are randomly grouped with 4-5 other people, and you have to make a 5-minute presentation. Depending on your group members, I find this assignment can be rather easy OR challenging, so prepare yourselves for this. Make sure to read over the rubric and have in-text citations no matter what. The textbook is translated and can come in handy for completing the quizzes but is not required.
You learn a lot about the history of anime (e.g. the edo period) and how anime became global, along with other aspects of anime pop culture. I can't say much because there are various aspects of the course that was covered, but every part of the course is interesting and teaches you more about Japanese culture. My favourite, in particular, was learning about the psychological aspects of Japanese horror movies and understanding the dark sides of J-pop.
The professor was very nice and always responded to emails right away.
A reminder that the course is NOT just about anime. Try to stay on top of doing the lectures the MOMENT they come out. It can save a lot of time. Hope this helps anyone!
