Comments on the course

This class was very interesting and I learned a lot. I had a 5-course load during the semester when I took this class, so it was challenging to fit in the readings and zoom lectures (that I watched later). If you're interested in environmental history, or general history, I highly recommend this class.

Course Content

The course content is very useful. The semester starts with how Native Americans interacted with the environment, through colonialism, and the rest of the semester covers America's development and neo-colonialism towards the environment. Dr. Crowder provides ample readings for students to become exposed to many environmental historians and scholars and to gain a broad understanding of American environmental history.

Comments on the professor

Dr. Crowder is one of the best, most caring professors at Sac State. While he assigns a lot of reading, he doesn't expect students to read every single weekly reading (you can get away with reading one article/week, as long as it gives you enough to discuss online). He also grants extensions on papers, so long as you ask. Dr. Crowder is very passionate about his field, which makes the course all the more interesting. And he is eager to help and converse with his students. One of the only "cons" I can think of is if you're very politically conservative, you should probably consider a different professor; however, he doesn't overly discuss politics.

Advice

Be prepared to read and write a lot.
