This class covers a lot of material, and covers it fast. ASU recommends you have prior exposure to chemistry before taking this course, and I would agree. I do think it could be done as a first course in chemistry, but you will have to spend a lot of time studying if all the material is new to you. Overall, I really enjoyed this course.
There are a lot of assignments for this class, but none of them are huge, overly difficult, or will individually kill your grade. You just need to keep up with the pace of work, and the assignment load is very manageable. There will be a weekly lecture quiz, lab, homework(s) in ALEKS, and "guided activities" in Canvas, which are basically just self-contained interactive learning assignments. This course moved fast, and covers multiple chapters per week, usually either 2 or 3. Assignment due dates are split between Thursdays and Sundays. There were 3 mid-term exams, 2 weeks apart each, and a comprehensive final exam. Formula sheets are provided for use on exams, and you can have a one-page written note sheet of your own. The math level is 95% basic algebra, zero trigonometry or calculus, ...read more
Professor was great. This is an online class, so with that in mind, I was really impressed with Professor Marks. She was heavily present in the discussions, to the point of providing 1-on-1 feedback, corrections, elaboration, etc. She used her own lectures, which were pretty good overall.
The textbook is optional, and if you look online, you can find it. I used the international digital edition, 6th ed. which is slightly different than the one recommended in the syllabus, and I had zero issues through the course. Take simple, dense notes as you go through the course. You will be able to use them on exams. You cover so many topics that by the time you get to the final, you will want your notes from the earlier chapters. Many people insist you need outside resources such as Chad's Review to be successful. You do not. It's fine to use it if you prefer to, but I used nothing other than the course lectures, notes, textbook, and handouts, and did great.
