Comments on the course

This class is a gentle introduction to writing. The assignments have attainable standards, and the writings are not too long. You have somewhat of a wide lane to operate in, creatively speaking. Try to enjoy it, as ENG 102 is more rigidly structured. The "assignment heavy" and "essay heavy" categories above are not to indicate that there is a high assignment or essay load for this course, just that those are the items that determine your grade.

Course Content

Course content is different than what I expected. It is more creative than anticipated. Top Hat is boring, but there is useful information in it, at times. I found the course chat (InScribe) to be almost completely unuseful, but others seem to like it. You will have a series of short writings (400-800 words), along with two or so assignments around 1000-1300 words. The "multimodal" content of your writing will be incorporating photos, graphics, video, links, etc. While you can of course incorporate sources and citations, they are not the emphasis of this class.

Comments on the professor

Prof Monarrez ran an organized class. She was available for office hours through Zoom and answered emails. I thought the grading criteria was clear and fairly applied. She gave feedback on major writing assignments. For a 100-level course, I thought the professor's involvement was suitable. Bottom line: I would not hesitate to take another course with Prof Monarrez, and I would not advise another to avoid this professor.

Advice

Be prepared to go out and conduct some "primary research." It's not as bad as it sounds. You can conduct interviews or perform what is essentially field observations. I opted for the latter. You can pass this class. I hate writing, and had little problems passing this class. Just do the assignments and read the rubrics. It isn't difficult.
