Course Content

This course introduces students to the ways language produces and resists social power. We will investigate rhetorical strategies in political speeches, the linguistic construction of authority, and the role of silence in negotiations. Students will analyze case studies ranging from parliamentary debates to customer service hold music, with particular attention paid to how phrases like “with all due respect” actually mean the opposite. Readings include Foucault, Butler, and several Yelp reviews of a Chili’s in Des Moines. Assignments consist of weekly discussion posts, a midterm essay on metaphor and coercion, and a final exam during which students must correctly identify whether a phrase is hegemonic discourse or just Brad Pitt muttering about hummus.
