Prof: Amy Ko / Spring 2021

Comments on the course

Probably one of my favorite courses I've taken at UW so far. Interactive approaches to typical lectures using lots of group discussion time (in a way that isn't boring) and a fun group project that takes up most of the quarter. Not a super hard class in terms of content and mastery, and the grading scale is easy to exploit or work around.

Comments on the professor

Amy Ko did a really good job teaching this class, and there was a surprisingly high amount of online student engagement. She cares about her students and their well-being, which can be seen by her sending out surveys each day to serve as a check-in and making sure nobody is left behind.

Advice

Ask for as much help/feedback of your projects from your TA, as they're the one grading them.

Prof: Scott Barker / Winter 2021

Aug 24, 2021

Comments on the course

Lots of busy work that is not necessarily hard, it's just a LOT during the middle of the quarter. Graded on weekly assignments (labs and short reading responses), group project, and 2 papers. The TAs do almost all of the grading (except the final group project) so it really depends on how harsh they are. This is overall a very broad class that is meant to introduce INFO and the iSchool to students, and it does that very well.

Advice

The group project is the biggest part of this class, no matter who the instructor is, so prioritize doing well on that. Also do not slack in this class because the way it is graded can be very unforgiving.

Rest in Peace Scott Barker! The thing I really liked about INFO 200 was him as a teacher - he was very passionate about this subject and class, and always willing to both explain things in deeper detail or present alternative explanations.

This class was not very hard but extremely interesting, and made better because this professor really cares about her students. The material is really interesting and she makes an effort to answer any question you have!

Advice

Get a good group for the group work portion.
