The course sucks. Ms Hemje wrote the course, and it becomes very obvious that she struggles to 1. Understand what it's like being a student and 2. Give a ****. Her grading rubric is ridiculously nitpicky, and she herself cannot be held to the same standards (ie, she makes mistakes... A lot. Oh and she doesn't give a **** if you made a mistake she's taking points off your report lol.) She wrote the lab manual without key details of the experiments, expects you to draw out and summarize the vague instructions, then takes off many points for lack of details to your report lmao. A lot of answers in the lab report you have to really pull out of your butt because you won't find it in the lab manual, the experiment, or the book. It's like Chem 1/2 and Fundamentals of Orgo labs but dumbed down and with a biochem perspective. I think it could be helpful if it was presented better.

Dr. Almeida rocks. She really avoids taking off points, gives you plenty of chances to correct yourself, and genuinely tries to help students succeed. She's an absolute gem. I cannot think of any cons to her as a biochem lab professor or classroom instructor.

Don't worry about the points being taken off each assignment. It's really not terrible, and the folks who fail this are not showing up and turning in labs so don't stress.
