Comments on the course

A standard UF microbio course that is heavy on memorization and exams. I will say there were quite a few opportunities for extra credit to boost your grade if you're on the cusp of a letter grade. There were weekly quizzes and sometimes a discussion board or case study. This class had Zoom sessions, but she recorded them and didn't take attendance.

Course Content

We learned about things like the extracellular matrix, protein modifications, gene transcription and translation/expression, the lipid bilayer, apoptosis vs. necrosis, and more. Some of these topics are helpful for other microbio courses like Genetics or Biochem.

Comments on the professor

Professor Fernandez was very kind and understanding. I once asked for an exam extension because I didn't feel prepared for the exam due to other responsibilities, and she gave it to me.

Advice

You DO need to buy the textbook to do the case study assignments. Lots of memorization, including images from her lectures in which you will be asked what something is.

Comments on the course

Pretty detailed oriented course with lots of new information. I found it all really interesting, but hard to wrap my head around some of the concepts I was hearing and trying to understand for the first time. Exams are most of your grade.

Advice

Put most of your energy into reading/reviewing the textbook, he can test you on any of the reading materials.
