Comments on the course

Overall, a well-designed course where you begin to learn actual engineering concepts and their applications. It can be challenging, and if you take Solid Mechanics, Dynamics, and Thermodynamics at the same time, you’ll probably fail at least one of them.

Course Content

Building from Statics (EGN 3310), you carry out more analysis and design exercises on various structures and mechanical devices, accounting for deformations caused by loading, the likelihood of an object failing or breaking due to the loads applied, and explore some mechanical properties of materials and their importance in engineering contexts.

Comments on the professor

The homework provided can be overkill at times, and sometimes require programming or other tasks outside the normal scope of this course. Design projects, while interesting and enlightening on the engineering design process, can be time consuming. Exams tend to be more difficult than any homework or in-lecture examples.

Advice

If available, visit SARC tutoring for Solids, to get more practice and exposure to more difficult problems, to be better prepared for the exams.
