Prof: Robert Clifford / Winter 2022
Dec 10, 2022
This course is run like a 200 level Indigenous studies course, but at 3 times the price. Little to no teaching on how to work with First Nations as a lawyer, heavily biased towards anti-establishment views. For example, lots of anti-pipeline rhetoric, but not once did a Chief from a nation that endorsed the pipelines come to speak on why they approved it.
Useful in the sense of providing context for the foundation of Canada and British Columbia, and the issues of colonialism, but again, it was run as if it was a general undergraduate course. No real takeways that are applicable for law students in their careers. Not sure why I had to pay triple the cost just to retake a course from my first year of university.
Robert is a nice guy, very open and clearly cares about his students. Unfortunately this course is taught by four different profs, leading to a very disjointed approach.
You have no choice but to take it, it is not informative for your legal career, but at a bare minimum one will learn about the historical wrongs committed against the Indigenous people of Canada.
