Comments on the course

Coming up to the end of this class and it is definitely not what I expected. It's not that I haven't enjoyed the class, it's just that the lectures and Canvas material have nothing to do with the assignments. I feel like everything that we have "learned" in class has been irrelevant to what we are meant to be learning to complete the assignments and more of a case study lecture on the work she has completed. Overall, don't take this class as a "I want to learn ___" and more of a "I like to write so let's take a CRWR class."

Course Content

Most of the course content is participation marks on video quizzes, discussions, and in-class writing assignments. All of these are incredibly easy and shouldn't be worried about, but the big assignments in the class are worth >25% (there are 3 of them) and aren't talked about much in class. By that I mean, we don't go over the tips and tricks on writing ___, instead we look at what the prof has done in her career and how we can apply it to our assignment. Overall, not bad course content, I've enjoyed reviewing what she has provided, but there is a lot of room for more understanding of the material if she taught it.

Comments on the professor

Funny and a good speaker. Wished that she would have taught more about the material and spent less time talking about her own work. She's approachable and super kind.

Advice

Expect to do a lot of research on topics on your own about how to write. If you can find someone or a group of people who goes to class every week, you don't need to show up to lectures (only to get the code for the in-class assignments).

3 assignments make up 70% of the mark, under 1 hour of readings each week and under 1 hour of participation each week that makes up 30%, of which most is completion mark. As long as you show up to class, do all the homework (very easy, usually less than 30 minutes a week), and you do the 3 projects which only take about 5-8 hours each, you will get an A. This class is less about grammar and more about creativity, nice way to dive into different forms of writing (podcasts, scripts, poems, blogs), without having to do the “boring” parts. You can implement any passion of yours into the writing, flexible prof.

Advice

Show up to class, do the 30-45 minute weekly reading and spend the 30 minutes needed for weekly homework. Only 3 projects all year, do them properly. The marking is based off of fulfilling all requirements, you don’t need to be Shakespeare.
