Prof: Darko Odic & Elise Stickles / Fall 2021

Jan 12, 2022

Comments on the course

Super interesting blend of topics delivered using different forms of media. It was co-taught by Prof. Odic (Psychology) & Prof Stickles (Linguistics/English Language), and I found that their teaching styles wove together really well. It's a very discussion-based course and the first one I've taken that truly values curiosity and diving into the (often off-topic) questions that the material brought up for students.

Course Content

Spanned gesture studies, psycho-linguistics, linguistic anthropology, language use on the internet and in academics, and so much more. Lots of content but all very applicable and interconnected.

Comments on the professor

I loved the teaching team! Darko and Elise would switch off each lecture, bringing their perspectives and expertise into the material. The class was really well-structured and the profs clearly laid out goals/learning objectives for each week.

Advice

Participation is everything! Do the readings and watch the online lectures before class— this course will be so much more fulfilling if you're able to confidently engage in the in-class discussions.
