Comments on the course

To be perfectly honest, the class was not at all what I had expected. ARS 160 is rather an introduction to the mediums of art rather than focused on refining your artistic techniques. While it was useful to be introduced to these types of mediums, I feel that it did not benefit me in the way I had anticipated.

Course Content

The content of this class was only relatively useful to introducing you to several different art mediums. You'll also get the basic concepts of hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling, as well as introductions to the types of drawings that are present in the world today. However, I don't believe there was much emphasis on improving your already present skill.

Comments on the professor

Ms. Hofstetter will give you relatively good feedback if you specifically ask for it. However, a majority of class has her sat at her desk while you work on a piece for nearly two and half hours, and when she walks around she will make small comments. Her grading is very subjective, as it may be with all art courses, and there does not seem to be a consistency in her grading. For several weeks, she did not return grades for the portfolios (which are the largest percentage of your grade). Additionally, the quizzes that go along with the units contain very subjective questions, which contain only some of the material talked about in class (she also does not post her slides nor record her lectures).

Advice

I wish I would have been told how extensive the work load would be for ARS 160, as it truly cut into my study time for other classes. The payoff in this class was not truly worth it in my opinion, and I truly felt that I would have enjoyed art more (as I already had) if I did not take this class. I would recommend, even if you love drawing, to either find another professor or pursue a different fine art elective.
