Comments on the course

This is one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken. It's very different from pretty much any other history class I've done here at SUU. Learning about the history of the university, working in Special Collections with one-of-a-kind historical documents and artifacts, and putting together projects and exhibits that will be presented for SUU's 125th Anniversary celebrations is really an experience unlike any other. Superb class, well put together, and it's a shame it may never come back, or at least not before the 150th!

Course Content

The course involves three different kinds of classes: 1. Lecture days, where Dr. Ryan talks about SUU's history. Notes aren't really required for these, and the small class size combined with the really relevant material makes for a great conversational and friendly atmosphere. 2. Interview days, where someone important to SUU comes in and is interviewed by Dr. Ryan and the class. Work days, where students are given the entire class period to work in Special Collections putting together their projects and researching in the historical documents available. THESE ARE SUPER IMPORTANT! Course evaluation is done on two metrics: attendance (easy, just show up) and projects. There are four pro...read more

Dr. Ryan and Dr. Mitchell of Special Collections were superb. Honestly, this was an incredible experience and their expectations were high for a good reason.

So much of the info you'll need is ONLY available in Special Collections, and often isn't digitized. Those Work Days are your lifeblood. Also, think early and often about your micro-exhibit. You'll be working with a group on them, so find a strong topic that has a good number of artifacts and other interesting aspects to build an engaging exhibit with. Finally, really consider how much info is available on the topics you're looking at. It may sound neat to pick someone in the Great Hall you've never heard of, but sometimes you haven't heard of them because there's only a small amount they actually contributed to SUU. Also consider the possibility of having too much to work with. Old Mai...read more
