Comments on the course

This is a class for people who are super interested in Old English, early medieval literature, and historical linguistics. The content can get quite heavy as you progress and take on more information, but it's worth it if you find the material fascinating.

Course Content

We used an Old English primer workbook to learn how to read and parse the language, including pronunciation, grammar, phonological changes over time, and translating prose and poetry. It's extremely useful if you plan to continue with medieval literature studies or historical linguistics, but it is not a light elective to take if you only have a passing fancy.

Comments on the professor

Matt is the best professor I've ever had. He's a very generous marker when it comes to assignments & exams, as he knows the material can be quite challenging. He's hilarious, warm, and cares so much about making sure students are both learning and enjoying themselves.

Advice

Make physical flashcards early, and study them every single day! Revision is absolutely key to absorbing the different aspects of OE, especially as you get into the nitty-gritty of the grammar.
