Comments on the course

The course load is pretty light. There are weekly writing assignments based off the lectures but they're only about 250 words. A big part of your final grade is attendance and also engagment. There are 2 big papers. He did record a good amount of the lectures for us so if you do miss some classes email him and ask him to send them to you. Most of the class is just listening to him spew his own philosophy.

Course Content

There's a good possibility some people may be bored out of their mind. I personally find the Bible intriguing and I'm also a Christian so this held personal interest for me. However for religious people- this is a more secular perspective on the Bible's Literature itself and you probably won't agree with Doyle on everything, but you can still get realy cool insight from him. But if the Bible doesn't interest you at all you may not find very much motivation to listen and stay attentive or even come to class. This is a great course for people who want to read parts of the Bible and learn a little about it and ways you can interpret the scripture.

Comments on the professor

Doyle is a relatively unique prof- he doesn't use canvas so all his communication is through email, but he's good at getting back to you. He also has some information on wiki (Ik weird) but I didn't find that very helpful. He is however reasonable. He gave me extensions when I needed it and I'm a commuter and he was always very understanding when I couldn't make class as long as I communicated with him. Most of the class is listening to him talk and I found it interesting most of the time but sometimes it's hard to pay attention. He's very intelligent and will tell you stories. He also has a scary good memory, he remembers people's individual assignments and comments they made weeks ago and he knows who goes to class and who doesn't. Although he doesn't take attendance reguarly there was a...read more

Advice

-Get either the Bible app or an actual Bible for class-- he uses exclusively KJV! I personally didn't take very many notes because I'm able to remember his lectures well just by actively listening- but if you do take notes bring paper because he doesn't like computers up. He also notices if you're playing around on your phone and not using the Bible App. -Go to as many classes as you can. -Try and contribute thoughts every once in a while and show you're attentive because trust me, he remembers and it could be the easy difference between a B- and a B or an A- and an A so why not. -A lot of his lectures can be repetitive but that means you're more likely to remember them and you can use what is discussed in the lectures in the weekly assignments as well as the papers-- so show up and if ...read more
