Comments on the course

The Beginning Chinese course was a fun one. As an introduction to the Chinese language, the lessons are very interactive and projects are very fun. The sense of community and fellowship that I forged with my fellow classmates was amazing as we were all working toward greater understanding of the Chinese language.

Course Content

The content of the class is very useful. The class has mostly has workbook and textbook exercises, which are able to be done weeks ahead of time. The projects are very interactive and help the class get to know one another . The quiz difficulty is on the easy to moderate side and you should be good if you have the material down and have studied. It is a very rewarding class because it helps prepare to speak to Chinese people, as you have a chance to via video call twice during the semester.

Comments on the professor

Professor Ren is an amazing professor. He is very kind, funny, and approachable. If you are confused about an aspect of an assignment and send an email, he will email back very quickly and help you out.

Advice

I would advise, as with any other foreign language course, that you study the terms and sentence patterns pretty vigorously. For me, I created some Quizlet decks and used some from others, for each lesson. Every day, I would go over the terms in match for each of the lessons until I succeeded in getting all of them right the first time about five times. That usually took 30 - 40 minutes but it was very rewarding when it came time for the quizzes.
