Prof: Jeff Richards / Spring 2025

This was a great class that helps students decide whether they’re genuinely interested in advertising law, ethics, or even legal frameworks in general. It’s not necessarily a “chill” class due to the pressure tied to the grading system, but it is highly informative and structured. One of the strengths of the course is how frequently the professor sends reminders about quiz dates, deadlines, and requirements, which helps students stay on track. However, it was stressful at times because the three quizzes make up the majority of the final grade, placing a lot of weight on test performance.
The class covers both foundational and more advanced concepts in advertising law and ethics. This content was incredibly useful, not just for anyone entering the advertising or marketing industries, but also for general business awareness. Surprisingly, the material taught in this course—such as deceptiveness, puffery, substantiation, and regulatory practices—is not covered in many other business or advertising classes, making it uniquely valuable. It’s especially helpful in understanding the real-world legal and ethical boundaries advertisers must operate within.
The professor clearly knows his subject and is very responsive to questions about advertising law and ethics, both during lectures and over email. When students reach out with specific legal or conceptual questions, he answers thoroughly and with insight, which shows how well-versed he is in the material. A potential downside, however, is that the course grade relies too heavily on the three major quizzes, which can make the class feel overly high-stakes, especially for students who learn better in other formats.
I wish I had known just how much the three quizzes would impact the final grade. They account for the majority of the course grade, which can be intense and pressurizing. I also would have appreciated knowing earlier that we would be required to complete both a Research Study Participation component and an Ethics Certification, which includes a $25 fee. That said, once you’re aware of these expectations, the class becomes more manageable with good time management.
