The course was excellent! I found everything to be very manageable for a first-year course. First off, the course outline has 2 mini assignments (a self-analysis and film assignment), a midterm (open book), and a final exam (closed book). Her outline was very fair and easy to manage, though I do suggest starting your assignments early. Her lectures also do get recorded, but attendance is suggested! I also do want to mention that the TAs were perfect choices for the course and will be most helpful for your learning. Don't be afraid to ask them for help during your TA classes!
In this course, it explores various topics using a psychology and sociology lens of focus. Personally, I found the content to be very interesting and helpful for my growth in the psychology field. It dives deeper into other topics, but you learn about how the relationships between individuals can impact their lives in society.
Dr. Erica Speakman is one of the best professors I have ever had. She teaches her content very well and is very encouraging, communicative and supportive towards students. Her lectures are very engaging, and you won't get bored listening to her teaching.
You don't need to buy the textbook for this course. There IS a free version that she suggested to students to use but make sure to double check with her first in case this does change in the future.

Highly recommend! The quizzes and midterm are open book. The exam isn't, but questions are incredibly straightforward, so if you put in a few hours of studying, you'll do well. There is a textbook, but you definitely don't need to read all of it, just the key points and terminology, which is at the end of each chapter. Anything else important Erica typically says in the lectures.
The course approaches social psychology from a social science lens (as opposed to a life science lens). If you've taken PSYCH 1X03, the social psych units were a great crash course in what you'll cover in SOCPSY. Really fascinating to learn how groups think and behave, and associated influences.
Erica is absolutely amazing! Super passionate about teaching, always open to answer questions or talk about something you found interesting!

Overall, I loved this class - it was the perfect mix of interesting and practical, and it complimented the stuff we learned in PSYCH 1X03 very nicely. Highly recommend it if you're interested in the science of people.
The content is mainly structured around the behaviours and cognitions of human beings. It's simple enough to grasp but there are a LOT of theories, terms and language that you need to learn - it'll absolutely be on the test.
Dr. Speakman is awesome - like a cool wine aunt, if I had to describe her. She does her best to make lectures engaging and entertaining and runs like a madman from section to section to answer questions. Her lectures are generally pretty concise and she uses class time well. My TA, Grace, was fantastic as well. My one gripe is that she doesn't provide any practice questions to prep for the tests and quizzes, which would be super helpful.
First of all, the textbook is pretty much required, but do NOT read every page of every chapter - there's so much useless fluff. There's a summary at the very end of each chapter that pretty much tells you all you need to know. Also, you don't have to get the newest version of the text - I used a digital copy of the Seventh Canadian Edition (got that from a friend :) ) and didn't miss out at all.
