Comments on the course

One of my favourite classes I've taken at Mac! Challenging, but very fair assessments that genuinely evaluated your understanding of the course content. Incredibly interesting lecture content, and a really, really lovely and amazing prof.

Course Content

The content in this class is super fascinating. Dr. Caitlin Mullarkey masterfully introduces you to fundamental principles underlying viruses (including their replication cycles and virus-host interactions) and provides specific examples, but when it comes to assessments, specific examples are never tested, rather she invents a novel virus and asks questions that force you to apply to principles. Instead of forcing rote memorization, this method of testing actually requires you to *understand* the material being taught.

Comments on the professor

One of the most wonderful professors I have had the privilege of being taught by during my undergrad. Incredibly knowledgeable (truly an expert in the field), an amazing lecturer, and super supportive of her students. She knew almost everyone in a 200+ person class by name, which is in itself an accomplishment and shows just how much she cared about actually connecting with her students. She's also a really fantastic mentor if you interact with her one on one.

Advice

Don't focus on memorizing every single detail, instead understand the material and be able to apply it to unique and novel scenarios.
