Comments on the course

This is the second introductory physics course taken by all STEM students in U0. This course builds off the Grade 12 physics course in high school. Zoom lectures went fairly well, as well as tutorials and online labs. The content was fairly difficult, but COVID made the grading much more lenient.

Course Content

Electrostatics: electric charge, field, and flux, continuous charge distributions, Coulomb's Law, Gauss's Law, work, energy, and power, electric potential. Electrodynamics: work, energy, and power, kinetics. Circuits: capacitors, resistors, Ohm's Law, Kirchhoff's Rules. Magnetostatics: magnetic force, field, and torque, magnetic potential and energy, Biot-Savart Law, Ampere's Law, Gauss's Law, right-hand-rule. Magneto-dynamics: induced magnetic fields, Lenz's Law, Faraday's Law, work, energy, and power, kinetics. Electromagnetism: electromagnetic waves, Maxwell's Equations, Poynting Vector, radiation intensity and energy. Ray Optics: ray diagrams, reflection, refraction, Snell's Law, Huygens' Principle, image formation, magnification, mirrors and lenses, optical instruments and appl...read more

Comments on the professor

A really nice professor who tries her best to accommodate during the pandemic. Explains the material quite well.

Advice

Do practice problems and make a "cheat" sheet with all the formulas, definitions, and constants because this course covers a lot of ground. Revisit lecture recordings to take notes because the professor goes pretty fast and in class. Labs appear to be really fun but COVID happened so nothing was done in-person. Integration and vector calculus are required to fully appreciate some of the content, but the course is designed such that only rudimentary integral calculus knowledge is required.
