A follow-up to the concrete portion of CIVE 318. Covers the design of various structural members made of reinforced concrete.
Introduction: engineering design, reinforced concrete properties. Design for Flexure: stress distribution over a beam, failure modes, design checks, deflection, doubly-reinforced beam, T-beams, 1-Way Slabs. Designing Columns: failure modes, compression-bending envelope, slenderness effects, design checks. Design for Shear: shear cracking in a beam, failure modes, simplified method, truss model, design checks. Design of 2-Way Slabs: design grid/area, tributary area, Direct Design Method, 2-way shear, critical shear section, unbalanced moments, 1-way shear, design checks. Design of Footings: allowable soil pressure, 1-way shear, 2-way shear, flexure. Design of Walls: bearing walls, basement walls, shear walls. Prestressed Concrete: properties. Structural Analysis: computer-assisted ...read more
One of the best in the civil department. Cares about his students and does his best to lighten the load. Explains concepts well.
Do all the assignment and tutorial questions and understand the most important concepts; the exams should then be quite straightforward.
