Comments on the course

A course on solving engineering systems using deformable members. Lays the foundation for more advanced structural engineering courses. Very dense in information, but the lectures and tutorials were decently interesting. Labs were hands on and very engaging.

Course Content

Statics Review: vectors, forces, solving force systems, drawing shear and bending moment diagrams, calculating moments of inertia. Stress: stress definition (axial and shear), stresses in connections (pin, boom, and rod), stresses in two-force members, stress on oblique planes, angles of maximum stress, stress states and stress elements, factor of safety. Strain: strain definition (axial and shear), stress-strain diagram of ductile and brittle materials, engineering vs. true stress values, Modulus of Elasticity, elastic vs. plastic behavior, fatigue, solving statically indeterminate systems, thermal stresses and strains, Poisson's Ratio, multiaxial loading, generalized Hooke's Law, dilation, Bulk Modulus, Shear Modulus. Axial Loading: relation between elastic and shear moduli and Poisso...read more

Comments on the professor

Very nice and understanding, will even give you hints during exams. Tries to lighten the heavy workload by allowing for group submissions, student input on scheduling, and hybrid course delivery methods.

Advice

Make sure to get along with your group as you get a group mark for assignments and labs. Do practice problems.
