Prof: Jim Carew / Spring 2021
Jul 26, 2022
The class itself isn’t bad, there is a lot of memorizing different rocks, formations, etc etc. but besides that it is actually pretty interesting information. You do have to take the lab with the course so that always helps you inside the classroom. Just avoid Professor Carew and you’ll be ok.
The content of the class is environmental geology…this includes rocks, land formations, studying the sediments, etc.
Professor Carew knows what he’s talking about and is obviously experienced in the department but isn’t fit for teaching an introductory course to mainly freshman students. He forgets that not everyone is a geologist and hasn’t studied the topic for many years, not to mention this is typically a lot of students first courses at the college and they tend to be nervous and don’t know what to expect. He isn’t friendly, doesn’t offer much help outside of class (that’s when you can even get ahold of him) and lectures his students when they don’t succeed the way he expected them to. He’s very arrogant and doesn’t care about his students. He lectures heavy and if you miss something, forget getting the information later he never posts the slides in time for the quizzes.
There isn’t any homework or extra credit for this class. You’ll get three large tests and a final that if you don’t do well on, will hurt you in the end. You do take quizzes every other class on the content of the class before so make sure you show up and study. For every point you earn on the quizzes he combines and gives them to you on the tests. But this usually doesn’t mean anything when the class average was always below 60%.
