Ah statics. So useful, so applicable, so fundamental. This class is the bread and butter for the rest of your engineering
Understanding the content of this class is crucial for almost every other class. Not only do you learned material like forces, free body diagrams, torques, vector math, but you also are introduced to the SAFER method. Most if not all engineering classes use the SAFER method for homework problems. Don't fight it. It is like fighting the waves of the sea. You will just hurt yourself and your grade. This class will be grind as you learn how to think through problems like an engineer. I spent almost 3 nights a week in the TA lab working through problems. I'm glad I worked hard to understand the material and not just try to get the best grade possible. I think it has paid off in the long run.
Carl Sorenson is great. I was lucky to have him as a teacher for this class. He tries to make it all interesting, and as the Associate Chair for the Program he is committed to helping students succeed. His office hours are a great time to learn more about him and ask him any question you have about the program or class.
When I took the class homework was once a week due Friday night I think. Don't wait until the night hw is due to go to the TA lab. It is a mad house. I started going to the TA lab at the beginning of the week half way through the semester and it gives you a lot more time with the TA's to ask questions and get proper not rushed guidance. If the class is still set up like this(and many other in the program are) practice getting the hw done sooner than later that way you can ask questions during class, and not have to panic over the TA help queue being 2 hours long. It will pay off in other classes if you do this as well.
