Prof: Michael Donnovan / Fall 2022
Oct 12, 2022
The work is not hard, but very frustrating because of how much time and effort it takes. You have to go into the sculpture room multiple times outside of class to do the most repetetive, tedious, and sometimes infuriating tasks in order to build your sculpture. Perhaps it is not as bad when you don't have a work-intensive major like STEM, but when you have other stuff to do it is the absolute last thing you want to do. On top of building your actual scuplture, there are many essays that have to be done to describe it. Prof. Donnovan is a great guy its just his class is not my favorite when i have to sit on a rickety stool for 2 and a half hours on a monday.
The content consists of 3 sculptures that you decide to make based on a specific medium (like reeds and bamboo skewers) as well as a few essays, as well as weekly assignments that take about 30 minutes each to do (just busy work). Each sculpture has its own grade based on it's critique. The final critique acts similarly to a final exam.
Prof Donnovan is a super nice guy and a great teacher. You can tell he is very passionate about the subject and that he is a very skilled artist. He is not intimidating, he is very supportive, and he is always trying to guide you in the right direction to make your project look the best.
Dont buy the glue gun, box cutter, and ruler when you join the class - he already has them in the class for everyone to use. Pace yourself on the work in the outside of class hours to avoid frustration and burnout Pick the easy way out. The simpler your design, the faster you get your work done and the more likely you are to get a decent grade. Dont pick this class if you know your major entails a ton of other work.
